An official said that the personnel were heading towards Janwara area around 7 pm after receiving inputs about the presence of illegal timber in the area. However, a group of locals took them for braid-choppers and beat them up mercilessly after damaging their vehicle, he said. A police official identified the victims as Bashir Ahmad Trunkroo, Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Farooq Ahmad Wani and Azad Ahmad. He said the injured personnel were shifted to Sub-district hospital Sopore for treatment.
