Taking cognizance of grievances received, Coordinator Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell Tassduq Mufti today urged upon all the educational institutions, Srinagar Municipality Committee (SMC), and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to immediately put a stop on the practice of burning of abscised leaves, willow and popular twigs (biomass) as it leads to severe winter air pollution. Highlighting the ill effects the burning of leaves, the Coordinator said, “The burning of abscised leaves, willow and popular twigs (biomass) releases large amounts of airborne particulates which include fine bits of dust, soot, harmful particles and toxic gases aggravating air pollution. The moisture in these leaves makes them burn slowly causing emission of smoke which is hazardous for both health and environment. He further added that the leaves smoke also irritates the eyes, nose and throat of small children and adults, particularly the elderly and people with asthma, emphysema, lung or heart disease. The incessant burning of leaves also leads to the formation of smog which affects the general visibility. Similarly, the production of carbon dioxide also contributes to Global Warming, he said. “Biomass waste burning is banned under relevant Environmental Acts. As it is harmful and illegal and needs to be stopped immediately. Providing an alternative of the burning of fallen leaves, Tassaduq Mufti said composting leaves is the most eco-friendly option which is an excellent fertilizer and can improve agriculture fields and gardens and can also be used to fill low land areas.
