Talk show on 'accountability on drug addiction' held at GDC Baramulla | KNO

Baramulla November 28 (KNO) : In order to make administration and society responsible and accountable, weekly newspaper The Varmul Post and Prestige Advertisers and Sopore in collaboration with Government Degree College Baramulla (GDC) Tuesday held a talk show on the topic ‘Drug Addiction-What we are doing?’ Under the theme ‘A conversation on accountability’ the program started in GDC auditorium with key note address from Professor Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo H.O.D Physics GDC Baramulla. In a power point presentation Professor Chalkoo informed the audience about the drug abuse, addiction and its harmful effects on the drug peddler, family and society in particular. “According to a data provided by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment India has more than 70 million drug addicts and there are ten suicides on a daily basis due to drug abuse. Kashmir right now isn’t in the list of most drug affected states but the consumption of drugs in increasing on an alarming rate,” Professor Chalkoo said. A short skit on drug abuse was also presented by the students of GDC Baramulla highlighting the hazardous effects of drug abuse on the society. On this occasion Director North Campus University of Kashmir Dr. Irshad Ahmad Wani, SSP Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, Principal GDC Baramulla Professor Beigh, Social Welfare Officer Mudassir Ahmad (K.A.S), MS Baramulla Hospital Syed Masood, Dr. Rouf Member of Idarah Fallahudarien Baramulla, Sheikh Aamir Social activist and Lawyer Baramulla Court and other dignitaries were also present. "Police Dept has not only launched a war against peddlers but has as well established Drug Deaddiction and Rehabilitation police to help the victims of substance abuse. But more needs to be done for which support from society is of paramount importance", SSP Baramulla said while replying to a question from audiance An interactive session was held where in representatives from police, law, health, education, civil society, religious institutions were made to answer the queries posed by guests, students and members of civil society. Regarding weak laws in the state on drug menace, Sheikh Amir said "We need to reform the law because current laws are not empowering law enforcing agencies to tackle the mance". Students from Shah Rasool Memorial Welkin Sopore, Sanctorum Institutes of Education Sopore, University of Kashmir North Campus, GDC Baramulla participated in the program. The talk show that saw jam packed audiance was sponsored by GDC Baramulla, Sanctorum Institutes of Education, Kathi Junction Varmul, JW Productions, Kashmir Apex society, Hamidbros media, Health and Fitness Gym Baramulla, Disha as career partner and Zab Enterprises as Stationary partner.
