A brief gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Larnoo area of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, police said.
An official said that the firefight began after a joint team of police, army and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation following specific inputs about the presence of militants.
“Cordon and search operation which was launched in forest area of Pahlipora Larnoo Kokernag in Anantnag has turned into encounter,” tweeted Jammu and Kashmir police from its official handle.
However, a source said that militants after exchanging fire with the forces managed to escape into adjoining forests.
He said forces rushed to the area and launched a massive search operation to nab the militants.
