With upper reaches receiving this year's first snowfall and the plains being lashed with light rains in the Kashmir Valley, minimum temperature here on Tuesday rose above the freezing point after nearly two months. "The improvement in minimum temperatures across the valley has finally broken the intense cold wave," an official of the Met department said. The minimum temperature was 2.2 in Srinagar, 1.2 in Pahalgam and minus 4.6 in Gulmarg. The 40-day long period of harsh winter called the 'Chillai Kalan' would also end on Tuesday. Kargil at minus 15 continued to be the coldest town in Jammu and Kasmir, followed by Leh at minus 11.9 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures also improved in the Jammu region due to light rain and nightlong cloud cover. Jammu city recorded 8.6, Katra 10, Batote 7.7, Bannihal 5.2, Bhaderwah 4.9 and Udhampur 8.5 as the minimum temperatures.
