A youth, called by police for questioning, was allegedly beaten ruthlessly inside a police station at Watergam area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Gyasddin Mir, 26, son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir, a resident Behrampura village was called by Station House Officer (SHO) Watergam for questioning and was beaten to the pulp inside the police station, his family alleged.

The family said the intervention of other policemen on duty saved their son from getting “trounced”. He was later taken to a local hospital at Dangiwachi for treatment. He has suffered serious wounds, the family added. “Our son works as a driver in a gas company. After being called for questioning, the in-charge officer Watergam told him that he is doing illegal work and thrashed him,” the family alleged.

“We later on went to the office of Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir Range to apprise him about the incident but unfortunately he was not there.” When contacted, the SHO concerned Iftikhar Ahmad told that it was a minor issue and the youth was later on set free. Asked about the pictures showing bruises on the youth’s body parts, the SHO said, “The family is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.” “It was a minor issue and he was called for questioning in connection with a case,” the SHO said.
