Ganderbal, Apr 25 (KNO) : Department of Law, Central University Kashmir (CUK) Wednesday organized an eco-walk from Nuner to Gotli Bagh here. It is an annual event initiated to sensitize the people and students towards preservation of biological and cultural diversity of Western Himalayas.
This year's event was special in the sense that it was one of the main activities of the university initiated after shifting to Ganderbal. Another important aspect of this eco-walk was that the targeted group for sensitization was Pathan population of Gotli Bagh. Western Himalayas are one of the most important ecologically sensitive zones of the globe and source to waters for 1/3rd of global population. Mighty rivers like Indus, Aamu, Ganges and their tributaries like Satluj, Yamuna, Jhelum, Chenab originate from this area.
“This region has been subjected to excessive vandalization through deforestation and construction of roads and dams,” locals told the participants. Department of Law has launched sustained campaign of generating awareness about these challenges through its eco-awareness programmes and the programme today was part of it. Apart from sensitizing the population about biological and cultural diversity of the region, students and faculty of the department had an interactive session with the students of the middle school of Gotli Bagh. They were made aware about the environmental issues and some gifts were distributed among them.
