SRINAGAR (KNO) : Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) today expressed strong resentment against assault on Dr Waseem by a cop at DH Baramulla. Dr Waseem is astute physician and senior vice President of DAK. The cop in uniform tried to use their muscle power and interrupt the doctor to deliver his professional duties. These acts of hooliganism , rowdiness and vandalism can't be tolerated by us any more.
The State government has misserable failed to ensure safety and security of doctors and paramedical staff. The government must bring an ordinance wherein manhandling of any health personnel or damage to hospital infrastructure or equipment should be a non bailable offence . The said ordinance has been already enacted by eighteen states of India. The failure of state government in enacting law in our turmoil hit state is unfortunate and is main reason for frequent thrashing of doctors by these hooligans and rowdies.
We time and again stress state government to bring an ordinance akin to Maharashtra government (prevention of violence and damage or loss to property) ,where in violence on doctors is non bailable offence. According to the said law, the offence is cognisable and non bailable and offenders are liable to pay compensation and a fine of approximate Rs 50,000. The ordinance has been already passed by eighteen other states of India. Furthermore there must be round the clock security apparatus available in all hospitals for protection of medical staff ,Dr Naik added. "Every time a strike is called, the government and administration conduct meetings and promise action. But, these promises are never fulfilled," said Dr Naik.
This is not the first time that doctors are being attacked on duty. This is going on since long time. Our concern for patient care is taken as our helplessness. But this has to be stopped somewhere.
