Sumbal town of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district observed a complete shutdown against police action in which an elderly vendor suffered pellet injuries and is on the brink of losing his eye sight.

The call for shutdown was forwarded by Traders Federation Sumbal. On Thursday, while dispersing students who were protesting against civilian killings on Srinagar-Bandipora road at Sumbal, police fired pellets that hit the face of a vendor Abdul Rashid. Rashid is currently under treatment at SKIMS Srinagar where according to doctors he may lose the sight of his right eye.

People in Sumbal and adjacent areas have been collecting donations for the treatment of the victim. Meanwhile, PDP leader and MLC, Yasir Reshi who hails from the Sumbal area has demanded registration of FIR against the erring cops. SSP Bandipora Sheikh Zulifkar said that they have registered FIR against stone-pelters. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Khurshid Ahmed Sanai has appointed SDM Sumbal Syed Naseer Ahmed as the inquiry officer to examine the circumstances which led to the injuries to the victim.

The inquiry officer has been directed to submit his report before the District Development Commissioner Bandipora within two weeks.
