SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 19 (KNO) : Police on Wednesday detained scores of Shia Muslims after they tried to carry out Muharram procession in the business hub Lal Chowk and at Jahangir Chowk area here. Witnesses informed that scores of mourners were detained after they managed to reach Moulana Azad Road despite restrictions imposed by the state administration in Srinagar areas.
They informed that the mourners managed to reach the business hub Lal Chowk and raised slogans in favour of Karbala Martyrs here. Police however swung into the action and detained scores among them. Earlier, police also detained scores of Shia Muslims at Jahangir Chowk here after they tried to carry out a Muharram procession towards Dalgate here. Police as per the witnesses also used batons to disperse the mourners at Dalgate, Jahangir Chowk here. Notably, the district administration had imposed restrictions in Srinagar areas to thwart the Muharram procession that was scheduled to start from Guru Bazar here to Dalgate.
The restrictions under section 144 CrPC were imposed by the authorities in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batmaloo, Shergadhi, Karan Nagar, Kothibagh, Maisuma, Kral Khud, R M Bagh and Nehru Park. The procession on 8th Muharram is being disallowed by the authorities since 1990. It is worth to mention here that on 10th day of Muharram – Youm-e-Ashoora –Imam Hussain (A.S) were martyred today 1400 years ago in Karbala, Iraq.
