Srinagar, October 20 (KNO) : Boycott in four districts of South Kashmir resulted in the victory of BJP in at least 53 wards of the urban local body elections. The polls were held in four-phases earlier this month, election. An official told (KNO) that that the unprecedented victory for the saffron party has given it control of at least four of the 20 civic bodies in the four districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian. The results of 94 wards of south Kashmir have been declared so far in which the Congress has managed to win 28 seats. The party, thus, will have control of at least three municipal bodies.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did well in Shopian where its candidates won in 12 wards unopposed. Five wards in the district did not have any nominations. In Devsar municipal committee, the party won all the eight seats. The area is represented by Congress leader Mohammad Amin Bhat in the legislative assembly.
Meanwhile, the saffron party failed to open its account in Ladakh, where it was confident of winning majority of seats. “We bagged many seats in south Kashmir but in Ladakh we were not able to win. Party high command will see what went wrong and why the BJP couldn’t even bag at least one seat there,” Altaf Thakur, the state spokesman of the BJP told (KNO).He said that that party will work out and finalise the strategy to further strengthen the party’s policy for the upcoming assembly polls.(KNO)
