Srinagar, December 27 (KNO) : Expressing serious concern over the precarious power situation in Kulgam district, CPI (M) and Awami Behbood Committee Kulgam on Thursday held a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD).According to a statement issued to KNO, the protest marched throughout Kulgam town and later submitted a memorandum to District Development Commissioner (DDC). Addressing the protest demonstration, Mohammad Afzal Parry, District Secretary CPI (M) Kulgam said that as the whole valley is facing grim electricity scenario, south Kashmir particularly district Kulgam seems to be at the receiving end. “There is almost no electricity in Kulgam town and its rural areas. Some rural areas of this district receiving erratic power supply are for the most of the time facing numerous problems on account of low voltage and the people are compelled to arrange alternative sources of illumination during the hours, they receive electricity,” he said. He said that no power schedule is being followed on ground and even metered areas of the district are facing long and unscheduled power cuts much to the annoyance of public. “The transmission and distribution system has also deteriorated thereby depriving the consumers of vital electricity facility,” he added. “Power Development Department (PDD) has failed to create a buffer stock of electricity transformers at district level to address the situation surfaced due to damaged transformers,” Parry said. He said the transformers develop technical snag, especially during winter months and the consumers are left helpless in darkness and freezing cold till the process of lifting, repairing and re-installing a faulty transformer is completed in weeks together.(KNO)
