Heaps of garbage, poor drainage facility irk Boniyar residents | KNO

Baramulla, December 31 (KNO) : Residents of Boniyar area here have expressed resentment against the heaps of garbage that could be seen piling in main market to Tehsil Complex and against the lack of proper drainage system. The drainage was renovated years before since then, the garbage has filled the drainage along roadside that creates inconvenience to pedestrians especially school going children, the residents told KNO. The garbage mainly plastic waste, polythene bags, mounds of domestic waste, bottles and street dust and animal waste is mounded on the national highway, a local said, adding that all the solid waste that comes out from homes, shops, hotels, Tehsil complex and other nearby private and government offices is put in the drainage and on roadside in front of government offices. “The area falls under the jurisdiction of Rural Development Department (RDD) and Revenue department that are supposed to lift the garbage. But on the roadside of Boniyar in front of Court and Tehsil Complex, piles of unattended garbage along roadside and dumped in drainage system could be seen,” the locals said. The residents of the locality and pedestrians are of the view that stinking smell emanating from the garbage have made it very difficult to walk on the roads. They complained that the concerned authorities only lift the solid waste from the roadside only the occasions else the “garbage is never lifted”. The locals and shopkeepers however blamed the concerned authority for their “ignorance”. A local told KNO that they feel pity in the concerned authorities for failing to discharge their duties and make the public suffer. He said that they have appealed several times to the authorities to make a dumping pit for solid waste or lift it from roadside and likewise renovate the drainage system in the area but every effort has have gone un-noticed. He said that they in collaboration local trade bodies in their afford had made a dumping site on the road side but that failed within months since the waste input in the site was high. Boniyar Shopkeepers association President, Saleem Khan said that concerned authority “do not care” despite all the garbage dumped roadside and drainage overflow is mounded in front of their offices. Tehsildar Boniyar, Imran Ahmad admitted the mess on roads, saying that since there is no Municipal Committee in Boniyar, they have been asking the civil authorities to help them in cleaning the mess around here. "We literally need help from civic authorities to clean the garbage from surroundings since there is no separate scheme for the same," Ahmad told KNO. BDO Boniyar, Syed G.N Andrabi told KNO that drainage here requires a lot of material since they could not maintain the actual share hence put to halt. “We will conduct the Gram Sabha for the said problem and sort out this mess since this needs to be done on local basis," Andrabi said. He assured that would waste will be put away and the drainage would be repaired after brought under some schemes likewise MGNREGA schemes.(KNO)
