Police says ‘Driver taken into custody, vehicle seized’

Srinagar, January 28 (KNO) : Assistant Director of Forest Protection Force (FPF) was on Monday crushed to death by an Army Casper at Chougal village of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district . Soon after his death, protests erupted in the area, seeking action against the Casper driver. Reports said that, Army Casper vehicle in this afternoon crushed a FPF official to death in Chougal when he was on his way towards Kulanagam. The deceased was driving an Alto car bearing registration number JK05E-5796. Soon after the incident, scores of people including men, women hit the roads and raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, seeking action against the Army Casper driver. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Handwara, along with police team reached the spot and tried to control the crowd, an eye-witness said. However, the forces resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. The protest also halted the traffic movement on Srinagar-Kupwara highway. Meanwhile, police in a statement issued to KNO said the driver of Army vehicle was taken into the custody while as the vehicle has also been seized. Police spokesman said that in this afternoon, one Army vehicle (CASPER) coming from Kupwara towards Sopore collided with an ALTO car bearing Registration number JK05B-5769 at Chogul, resulting critical injuries to the driver of the car. “The injured was taken to PHC Chogul for treatment where doctors declared him brought dead,” police said, adding that the deceased driver was identified as Aijaz Rasool Wani, son of Gh Rasool Wani of Sopore. “In this connection, a case under FIR number 15/2019 under section 279, 304-A, 427 RPC has been registered in Police Station Handwara and investigations taken up,” police said, adding that driver of the Army vehicle has been taken into custody and vehicle seized.(KNO)
