Kulgam encounter aftermath: A Monday of funerals as five slain militants lowered in graves | KNO

Witnesses say people travelled from far off districts to participate in 20 rounds of funerals for Hizb, Lashkar militants

Srinagar, February 11 (KNO) : A day after the killing of five militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba, it was a day of funerals for the people of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday even as the funeral prayer of one of the slain militant was offered late on Sunday evening. Witnesses told KNO that the funeral prayers of Parvaiz Ahmed of Qaimoh were held late on Sunday night and he was also laid to rest in the mid-night. “Thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of Qaimoh militant Parvaiz. There was only one round of funeral prayers for him but that was a huge funereal in which almost 50,000 people participated,” said an eye-witness. Remaining awake through-out the night in the bone chilling cold, people thronged the local masjids to offer Fajr (pre-dawn prayers in Kulgam villages) only to participated in the funeral prayers of four remaining slain militants. Witnesses told KNO that Dr Waseem Ahmed, a phd scholar was laid to rest but not before three rounds of back to back funerals. Similary, Aqiab Nazir, another slain militant too was laid to rest after seven rounds of funerals. Another militant Zahid Parray was lowered in the grave after four rounds of funerals. “For Idress Wani of Arwani village of Kulgam, six back to back funerals were offered before he was lowered in the grave amid pro-islam and pro-freedom slogans,” the witnesses told KNO, adding that people from far off villages including Pulwama, Ananantnag, Shopian and even Pampore had travelled through out the night to participate in the funeral of five militants of Hizb and Lashkar, who were killed in an encounter with forces at Kelley village of Kulgam on Sunday morning.(KNO)
