Srinagar, Apr 01 (KNO): The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory has replaced Chief Minister as chancellor of the Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) and Cluster Universities of Jammu and Srinagar. According to Jammu & Kashmir Re-organisation (adaptation of state laws) order, 2020, the LG will be chancellor of IUST, BGSBU and Cluster Universities of Jammu & Srinagar. As per wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), IUST and BGSBU are partially funded by the Wakf Board and Wakf Council. After PDP-BJP Government collapsed in June 2018, amendments were made in the laws of IUST and BGSU to empower Governor to function as chancellor of these varsities only during Governor’s rule and President’s rule. According to the order, the term of vice chancellors of Kashmir University and Jammu University have also been reduced to three years from existing five years. The VCs of these two varsities can be removed by the Chancellor (LG) without consulting the pro-chancellor (CM) on the ground of misbehavior or incapacity or if it appears to him that the continuance of the vice-chancellor in office is detrimental to the interests of the University, after holding an inquiry against him. The government has amended the law governing creation of yet-to-be established National Law University to appoint Chief Justice of J&K High Court as its chancellor. Under the law enacted during the previous PDP-BJP government, Chief Minister was chancellor of the Law University – (KNO)
