Inmates allege vandalism of their belongings by jail authorities, forces resort to tear gas shelling, barrack catches fire

Srinagar, April 05 (KNO) : Massive overnight clashes broke out in Central Jail Srinagar after the inmates resisted change in their barracks that triggered a heated argument and then protests followed by clashes between prisoners and jail authorities.The inmates alleged that the jail authorities barged into their barracks and damaged their belongings and tore apart books as well. Sources told KNO that two inmates sustained injuries while as forces resorted to teargas shells to disperse the irate inmates as a result one of the barracks caught fire. Situation remained tense inside the prison through out the night as pro Islam slogans reverberated from the Central prison, sources revealed. Meanwhile, a top police officer told KNO that a high level team of officials have went inside the Central Jail to assess the situation. " There was some issue over barracks which is being looked into," he said.(KNO)
