Shutdown, internet gag marks R-Day in Kashmir | KNO

Srinagar, January 26 (KNO) : Kashmir remained shut while as internet remained suspended and journalist protested on Republic Day in Kashmir on Saturday. Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) compromising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown and to mark Indian Republic day as black day. All the shops, business establishments, petrol pumps and others remained closed while as the traffic was also off the roads throughout the day. Eerie calm on the roads prevailed in other districts as well and roads were deserted as private, and passenger vehicles remained off the roads. Forces in large numbers were deployed over the roads leading to the Sher e Kashmir Stadium were main function was held. Traffic police had already issued a traffic diversion plan for motorists and had cited security reasons for that. Authorities, however, suspended mobile internet services on the occasion which however is a departure from previous years policy. Meanwhile, the Journalists boycotted the R Day function at SK stadium after senior journalists were barred from covering the event. Journalists boycotted the event and left the venue to protest over the administrations decision in city center Lal Chowk. Scribes assembled at Press Enclave and marched towards Ghanta Ghar. Advisor to Governor Vijay Kumar later said that the government will look into the matter as to why journalists were barred from entering the premises of the function. (KNO)
