Doda, Sep 15 (KNO): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Jammu and Kashmir president and Doda MLA Mehraj Malik was detained by Doda Police on Tuesday and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court after a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) was issued against him in connection with a pending criminal case. According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) Police clarified that Malik was not taken into custody in any fresh case but was detained solely to execute the court-issued non-bailable warrant. He was subsequently produced before the court, where proceedings in the matter continued. During the hearing, the court framed charges against the legislator in the old case, paving the way for further trial proceedings. The case will now proceed in accordance with law. Security was tightened around the court complex as supporters and onlookers gathered during Malik's appearance before the court. Malik, who serves as the president of the AAP's Jammu and Kashmir unit, had earlier received major legal relief in April 2026 when the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), holding that his preventive detention was unlawful. The Doda legislator emerged as one of the most prominent political figures in the Chenab Valley after winning the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from the Doda constituency. He secured 23,228 votes to defeat BJP candidate Gajay Singh Rana, who polled 18,690 votes, by a margin of 4,538 votes. The National Conference finished third in the contest. Malik's victory also marked the Aam Aadmi Party's first-ever Assembly seat in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, making his political rise one of the notable outcomes of the 2024 elections—(KNO)
