It was exactly what the war of nerves means. More than a pilot’s decision, an Special Police Official (SPO) who was in an armoured vehicle threw back the grenade that was tossed towards the vehicle and actually  landed at the target. Four persons including the SPO, a CRPF man and a cop were injured. A civilian was also hurt, reports said. All the injured are out of danger and have survived with minor injuries.

“They were 15 people from CRPF and police in the bunker gadi,” a senior police officer said. “Militants lobbed a grenade and it actually landed in the vehicle.” The SPO, he said, was quite witty and he threw it back on the road where it actually exploded.

The officer did not offer the name of the SPO but insisted that had the grenade exploded in the vehicle, it would have killed most of the 15 people who were in the vehicle because it is a bullet proof vehicle and would not have permitted even a single splinter to move out. “It would have been a massacre,” he said. “And this boy saved all of them just because he decided in a split second.”

After the grenade exploded on the road, the splinters hit many people. These included three persons who were in the vehicle: the SPO, a cop and a CRPF man. A pedestrian who was moving around also was hurt. The officer said all the injured are minor and they have been rushed to the hospital.

The incident took place near a bank in Sopore, police said.
