Baramulla, May 12 (KNO): With the situation stabilizing along the Line of Control (LoC) following a recent ceasefire, MLA Uri, Dr. Sajad Shafi on Monday said that rebuilding homes for the displaced residents of the shelling-hit Uri is now the top priority. Speaking to the reporters, NC MLA, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) stressed the need for urgent rehabilitation of those who lost their houses to cross-border shelling and announced that a formal demand for enhanced compensation has been submitted to authorities. He said that he has requested the Chief Minister to consider compensation of Rs 10 lakh for fully damaged homes and Rs 5 lakh for those partially damaged, adding that those who have completely lost their homes will be temporarily accommodated in Panchayat Ghars and other available buildings. The MLA assured that efforts are underway to ensure a phased and safe return of displaced families, with over six villages already declared safe after thorough clearance by security agencies. He applauded the residents of Baramulla for their exemplary hospitality in hosting evacuees from Uri during the shelling. “Baramulla opened its doors to Uri — their support is worth hailing,” he said, adding that the district administration and police remained on the ground throughout, ensuring the safety and care of displaced citizens. Dr. Shafi said that permanent safety measures must follow rehabilitation. “We will also initiate construction of community and individual bunkers to avoid such distress in the future. The people of Uri have suffered enough,” he said. While acknowledging the ceasefire as a welcome development, Dr. Shafi urged residents of remaining villages not yet cleared to wait patiently. “The process is being carried out in a phased manner. Sensitization of areas is ongoing. Assessment teams have been directed to review damage and ensure safe returns,” he said. Meanwhile, he appealed to both India and Pakistan to uphold the ceasefire and prioritize long-term peace over provocation. “Let this not be a temporary silence. We want lasting peace so that our people never have to flee their homes again,” he said—(KNO)
