Srinagar, May 16 (KNO): As the early morning sun warms the fields of Kashmir’s famous ‘Strawberry Village’ in Gassoo, located near Dargah Hazratbal on the outskirts of Srinagar, the farmers have begun harvesting their first bunch of vibrant red strawberries, marking the start of the much-awaited season.
The village, known for its fertile soil and favourable climate has emerged as a hub for strawberry cultivation over the past few years.
With baskets in hand and hope in their hearts, farmers say the harvest brings not just income but a deep sense of satisfaction.
“This is the time we wait for all year,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a local farmer while speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). He said the strawberries have grown, and the yield looks promising this season.
Locals from the Gasoo area say the seasonal fruit has also started attracting visitors and photographers, who come to witness the beauty of the fields.
One of the photographers said the essence of the harvest through his lens. “There is a unique charm in these strawberry fields. The morning light adds to the beauty and it is truly a photographer’s delight,” he said.
While strawberries are being harvested now, farmers are also preparing for the cherry season, which usually begins in late May and runs till early July. The Makhmali and Double cherry varieties are picked from mid-May, while the sweet Mishri variety is ready by the first week of June—(KNO)
