COVID-19: 21 cops, medical intern among 59 test positive in J&K, tally climbs to 1449 | KNO

2 more deaths reported; over 10 thousand samples pending for tests at SKIMS

Srinagar, May 21 (KNO): Twenty one cops, a medical intern and two pregnant ladies are among 59 persons who were tested positive for novel coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, taking tally of total cases in the Union Territory to 1449. Details gathered by news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveals that among new cases detected in Jammu and Kashmir, 14 were tested positive at SKIMS, 33 at CD hospital, six at Lal Path Srinagar, four at JVC Bemina and two at Army's command hospital Srinagar. Among 59 new cases, 51 were from Kashmir division while as eight are from Jammu division. With this, the total number of positive cases in Kashmir division has reached to 1238 including 615 recoveries and 18 deaths while as total number of positive cases in Jammu division has reached to 211 including 69 recoveries and two deaths. Officials told KNO that total number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 754, which includes 605 from Kashmir division and 140 from Jammu division. “Of them, 12 are from Anantnag, 21 from Kulgam, five from Srinagar, four from Budgam, seven from Kupwara two from Ganderbal, one from Jammu district, three each from Ramban and Kathua and one from Kishtwar,” officials disclosed. Dr G H Yatoo Nodal Officer for COVID-19 at SKIMS told KNO that out of 1900 samples tested on Thursday, 14 were found positive. He added that 10220 samples are yet to be tested at SKIMS. Dr Salim Khan Nodal Officer for COVID-19 at GMC Srinagar told KNO that out of over 701 samples tested at CD hospital, 33 were found positive. He further added that 31 new cases include 21 cops posted in Kulgam, 10 persons from Anantnag including two pregnant ladies, a medical intern (doctor) from Psychiatry section of SMHS, who was staying at GMC Srinagar Hostel campus Bemina and one from Kulgam. A senior police official said that 21 cops who are posted at Reserve camp in higher secondary school Chawalgam have tested positive for COVID-19 “They are posted at HSS Chawalgam from last 3 months and not in DPL Kulgam,”he said. SSP Kulgam Gurinder Pal Singh told KNO that these cops are under command of DPL Kulgam. “They were in a separate compound since beginning of Lockdown and were put only on COVID- related duties like guard at Covid care centres, dealing with non-cooperative covid positive or potentially positive persons, etc,” he said. Lt Col Inam Danish Khan from Army's Command Hospital Udhampur told KNO that 1066 samples were tested at the hospital in last 24 hours. Meanwhile, two more persons died in Jammu and Kashmir due to covid-19 including a 70 –year- old lady from Parisabad Budgam and a 80- year- old lady from Bemina Srinagar, taking the death toll in J&K to 20 including 18 from Kashmir division and 2 from Jammu division. Dr Salim Khan Nodal Officer for COVID-19 at GMC Srinagar said that the lady from Parisabad, Budgam who was initially admitted in SMHS Hospital on 15th May, tested positive for COVID “She was shifted to CD Hospital Srinagar on May 18 and passed away today,” he said, adding that she was admitted as a case of COPD with restrictive lung disease and COVID pneumonia. He further said the 80 -year -old lady from Usmania colony Bemina Srinagar who died at SMHS on Wednesday tested positive for covid-19 on Thursday. “She was admitted with bilateral pneumonia and hypertension on May 19 and was kept in isolation ward where she died on Thursday,” he said, adding that her body was kept in GMC Srinagar mortuary after she died yesterday. Pertinently, Srinagar district has reported six deaths, highest in any district followed by Baramulla 4, Anantnag 4, Budgam 2 while one death each has been reported in Bandipora, Kulgam, Udhampur, and Jammu—(KNO)
