Srinagar, Oct 02 (KNO): Education Minister Sakeena Masood Itoo on Friday said teachers must go beyond imparting textbook knowledge and help students learn how to think, question and adapt to a rapidly changing world. Addressing a Gandhi Jayanti event at SKICC Srinagar, Itoo, according to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of education remained relevant in shaping children's character, thinking and conduct. She called for greater emphasis on practical knowledge, critical thinking, creativity and values in classrooms. "A good teacher does not merely teach from a book; a good teacher teaches students how to think and inspires them," she said, stressing the need to equip teachers with modern training, technology and contemporary teaching methods while valuing their experience. The minister said education should prepare children not only to secure jobs or score well in examinations but also to face life with confidence, responsibility and strong values. She said Gandhi's vision of education focused on nurturing responsible human beings, adding that merely imparting information was not enough in today's fast-changing world. Highlighting the impact of technological advancements, Itoo said students must be encouraged to understand situations, ask questions, solve problems and continuously acquire new skills. "We have to prepare a generation that can adapt to changing circumstances and continuously improve," she said. She called for greater exposure to practical subjects and skills, particularly in agriculture, health, technology and other fields linked to everyday life and employment opportunities. The minister said modern education must blend technology and emerging skills with Jammu and Kashmir's rich traditions of art, literature, culture and spirituality, ensuring students remain connected to their roots. Itoo also stressed the importance of teaching mutual respect and tolerance in schools, saying children should learn to listen to one another and understand that differences of opinion do not amount to enmity. She urged students to use knowledge, skills and technology responsibly and in service of humanity, while respecting parents, teachers and people from all backgrounds. "Success should not be measured only by marks. True success lies in using your character and knowledge constructively in life," she said. The minister said efforts must continue to strengthen the education system and ensure quality education reaches every child, including those in remote and far-flung areas. She added that Gandhi's ideals should become part of everyday life rather than remain confined to commemorative occasions. Calling for classrooms that promote knowledge, respect, creativity and innovation, Itoo said educational institutions must prepare students not merely for examinations but for life—(KNO)
