Budgam, Sep 17 (KNO): After years of delay, the long-awaited macadamization of the Hanjura–Brenwar road finally began on Wednesday, bringing much-needed relief to residents of Surasyar and adjoining areas. The work was formally inaugurated by J&K Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather in the presence of officials from the PMGSY department. As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), locals, who had repeatedly protested over the road’s dilapidated condition since 2017, expressed their gratitude for the start of the work. They, however, urged the authorities to ensure proper drainage along the stretch so that the newly-laid road is not damaged by water in the future. Speaking at the inauguration, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said, “I have been assured by the Executive Engineer that the macadamization work will be completed within 20 days and that work on the damaged irrigated road at Brenwar, affected by recent heavy rains and floods, will be taken up within a week.” According to officials, the project covers a 10.83-kilometre stretch from Brenwar to Surasyar at an allotted cost of Rs 2.14 crore through a tendering process. The Executive Engineer (PMGSY) also said the department is aware of drainage issues on the route and will coordinate with the Irrigation Department to address them in due course. Residents said they are hopeful that with proper drainage facilities, the road will remain durable and provide long-term relief to commuters—(KNO)
