Srinagar, Jun 24 (KNO): In a display of Kashmir’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony, members of the Kashmiri Hindu community on Wednesday joined Muharram observances in Srinagar and paid tributes to Imam Hussain (AS) - the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) - who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. Participating in the 8th Muharram procession, a Kashmiri Pandit representative, Jagdish Bhardwaj said the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (AS) transcend religious boundaries and continue to inspire people across communities. “Imam Hussain sacrificed his life for truth, justice and humanity. Such sacrifices are never forgotten and remain etched in history forever,” Bhardwaj said while addressing mourners. Bhardwaj, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said he had come on behalf of the Kashmiri Hindu community to express solidarity with the Shia community during the days of mourning and remembrance. He said Kashmir has always been an example of communal brotherhood, where people of different faiths stand with each other in times of joy and grief. “The Constitution of India teaches us to live together with mutual respect and brotherhood. We are partners in each other’s happiness and sorrow,” he said. Referring to the annual Kheer Bhawani mela and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, Bhardwaj said members of the Muslim community, including Shias and Sunnis, have traditionally extended support to Kashmiri Pandits and Hindu pilgrims. “Just as people from all communities participate in and support Hindu religious events, we too stand with our Shia brothers during Muharram. This mutual respect and participation reflect the true spirit of Kashmir,” he added. The participation of Kashmiri Hindus in the Muharram procession was widely appreciated by mourners, who described the gesture as a reflection of Kashmir’s inclusive culture and shared heritage—(KNO)
