Srinagar, Aug 05 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir recorded five human rabies deaths in 2024, up from four in 2023 and none in 2022, according to data tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the deaths were linked to the stray dog menace, which has been rising across several states. The Centre said municipalities are responsible for controlling stray dog populations under Article 243(W) of the Constitution and are implementing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, which focuses on neutering and anti-rabies vaccination. It said that in November 2024 and again in July 2025, the advisories were issued to all states and Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, to ensure effective ABC implementation and to develop required infrastructure—(KNO)
