J&K records lowest student dropout rate in ‘High-Burden’ category | KNO

Srinagar, Jun 20 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir ranks near the bottom of the ‘high-burden’ secondary school dropout list, recording a dropout rate significantly lower than most of the states in its category. According to the official documents available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Jammu and Kashmir had a dropout rate of 12.9 percent at secondary level. “High rates are further observed in Telangana with 13.2 percent, Jammu & Kashmir with 12.9 percent, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu at 12.5 percent each, and Nagaland with 12.1 percent. Maharashtra 11.5 percent, Sikkim with 11.4 percent, and Tripura at 11.3 percent mark the lower end of this high-burden group,” it reads. In March-2025, KNO reported that Jammu and Kashmir in the previous two years was facing an increase in dropout rate at primary, upper primary and secondary school levels. At that time primary level J&K was facing a dropout rate of 3.89 percent in the year 2022-23 at primary level that further increased to 8.87 percent in the year 2023-24. The previous official figures reveal that school at upper primary level, Jammu and Kashmir was facing a dropout rate of 2.65 percent in the year 2022-2023 and 4.23 percent in the preceding academic year. It reveals that in 2020-21, Jammu and Kashmir schools at secondary level were facing a dropout rate of 3.68 percent followed by 5.96 percent in 2021-22 and 6.20 percent in the academic year 2022-23. The report suggests that in the academic year 2023-24, schools in Jammu and Kashmir at secondary level were facing a dropout rate of 9.07 percent—(KNO)
