Srinagar, July 23 (KNO): In a bid to strengthen solid waste management, the Jammu and Kashmir Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD) has begun a UT wide sticker campaign to encourage segregation of waste at source through a four bin system in all urban areas.
Officials told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the municipal bodies, including the Srinagar and Jammu Municipal Corporation, have started distributing and pasting instructional waste segregation stickers in residential areas, commercial establishments and other high footfall locations under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, to ensure compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026.
They said Community Mobilisers and Swachhata Executives are carrying out door to door awareness campaigns in every municipal ward across the UT, interacting with residents and placing colour coded stickers at waste collection points to encourage segregation of waste at source.
The initiative aims to improve waste processing, reduce the burden on dumping sites and ensure safer handling of waste by sanitation workers, officials added.
As per the four bin system, blue stickers are meant for dry recyclable waste such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, cardboard and Tetra Paks, while green stickers are for biodegradable wet waste including food leftovers, fruit and vegetable peels, tea leaves, coffee grounds and garden waste.
Similarly, red stickers are meant for hygiene waste such as sanitary pads, diapers, tissues, wet wipes and menstrual cups, while black stickers are designated for household hazardous waste including used batteries, expired medicines, thermometers, tube lights, bulbs, chemicals and nail polish products.
The Housing and Urban Development Department appealed to residents, shopkeepers and institutions to cooperate with field staff and adopt the four bin waste segregation system to help build a cleaner and healthier Jammu and Kashmir—(KNO)
