Anantnag, Aug 26 (KNO): Anantnag’s Majid Magray has scripted an inspiring sporting success story by representing India in a mix-disability Cricket series against England, bringing pride to Jammu and Kashmir and demonstrating that determination and talent can overcome physical and social barriers.
A resident of Anchidoora in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Majid, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) is associated with J&K team and is the captain of the Indian mix disability Cricket Team. His journey from a small locality in Kashmir to leading the national side on an international stage has emerged as an inspiration for aspiring sportspersons across the region.
Majid delivered a memorable performance during the team’s recent tour of England, scoring an explosive 54 runs off just 15 balls in Lords. His aggressive knock displayed his batting ability and played a significant role in highlighting the competitive potential of Indian disability cricket.
Speaking to KNO, Majid said representing India had been one of the most memorable moments of his sporting career.
“It is a matter of immense pride for me to wear the Indian jersey and represent my country. Coming from Anchidoora in Anantnag and reaching an international platform has been a long journey, but my family, teammates and supporters gave me the confidence to keep moving forward,” Majid said.
He said his performance in England was the result of continuous hard work, discipline and the support of his teammates.
“Scoring 54 runs off 15 balls gave me a lot of confidence, but I see it as the result of the collective effort of our entire team. Every player worked extremely hard, and we went to England with the determination to give our best for India,” he said.
Majid also stressed that disability should never become a reason for a person to abandon his or her dreams.
“I want to tell young people, especially those with disabilities, that they should never consider themselves weak or limited. If you have talent, confidence and the determination to work hard, you can achieve your goals. The only thing required is an opportunity and the courage to use it,” he said.
Following the team’s return to India, Majid and fellow members of the Indian mix disability Cricket Team met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Majid said the interaction was encouraging for the players and provided them with a sense of recognition at the national level.
“Meeting the Union Home Minister was a proud and encouraging moment for all of us. We briefed him about mix disability Cricket, our achievements and the difficulties faced by players. He congratulated the team and assured us of his support,” Majid said.
He added that greater institutional support could help disability cricketers achieve even greater success internationally.
“There is enormous talent among players with disabilities, but we need more support, better facilities, regular tournaments and opportunities to train and compete. If players are provided with these facilities, I am confident that we can bring many more victories for India,” he said.
Majid said his journey would not have been possible without the encouragement of his family, coaches, teammates and well-wishers.
“My message to every aspiring sportsperson is simple—never give up. There will be challenges and difficult days, but consistency and hard work eventually open doors. I want my journey to give hope to youngsters who believe that their circumstances can stop them from achieving their dreams,” he said.
Residents of Anchidoora and adjoining areas have expressed pride over Majid’s achievement, saying his success has put their area on the international sporting map.
Locals said Majid’s rise should also encourage authorities and sporting organisations to identify talented players from urban, rural and far-flung areas and provide them with proper training, equipment and financial assistance.
