Sopore, Mar 02 (KNO): Six years on, water filtration plant at Alsafa Colony in Sopore outskirts falling under the Jal Shakhti (PHE) sub-division Watergam is awaiting completion. Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), residents said PHE department has failed to complete work on the plant causing inconvenience to them. They said people are forced to consume contaminated water from Nallah Pohru (stream flowing nearby) and there is an apprehension of disease outbreak in villages, they said. Arafat Ahmed, a local said that the project was sanctioned in 2017 and accordingly the work was started. The project once completed is going to benefit hundreds of people in several villages, he said. Mohammad Younis, another local said that they are facing an acute shortage of drinking water supply and the authorities concerned have turned a deaf ear towards their repeated pleas. Assistant Executive Engineer at Jal Shakhti (PHE) department sub-division Watergam told KNO that the project is languishing and the executing agency has stopped the work citing a dispute with forest officials. As of now only 28% of work has been done on the said project, he said, adding that the project is likely to shift to the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme and will be completed at the earliest. He refuted the allegations of unhygienic water supply being provided to the residents saying there is already a mechanism in place which provides them a filtered water supply—(KNO)
