Bandipora, Jun 05 (KNO): Geology and Mining department took strict action against illegal mining, extraction, and transportation of raw materials in various areas of Bandipora and seized 46 vehicles including JCBs during raids since last month. An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the vehicles were found to be involved in illegal activities related to mining and transportation of raw materials. The operations targeted areas such as Gamroo, Lankreshipora, Kulhama, Saderkoot and other parts of the district, he said. The department led by District Mineral Officer (DMO) Mumtaz Ahmad has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining. “The crackdown on sand and boulder mining is ongoing in different parts of the district. In May, a fine of Rs 7 lakh was imposed for various offenses related to illegal mining. The department conducted raids during both day and night to catch offenders,” Ahmad said. To prevent further illegal activities, he said that the department disconnected ramps used by trippers for accessing Arin nallah embankments and loading bajri. However, these ramps were rebuilt by offenders during the night. The department plans to coordinate with the Flood Control Department to address this issue, he added. DMO Bandipora said that the entire team is on high alert to monitor illegal mining in the district. He assured that all cases of illegal mining would be dealt with swiftly and according to the rules, ensuring appropriate actions against the violators through a fast-track system. The department's efforts aim to curb illegal mining and protect the natural resources of the Bandipora district, he added—(KNO)
