Srinagar, Aug 27 (KNO): Panic spread across Kursu Rajbagh in Srinagar on Wednesday as floodwaters from the swollen Jhelum river breached residential pockets, submerging lanes, bylanes, and courtyards before entering several homes.
The situation prompted the deployment of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Srinagar Police, who rushed boats and personnel to assist residents.
Eyewitnesses told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that water levels surged sharply during the day, leaving families anxious and forcing many to move essential belongings upstairs.
“The lanes and bylanes are already under water. It has now entered our courtyards and some houses. People are frightened and on edge,” said Ghulam Ahmad, a resident of Rajbagh. He said the water started entering the area at around 10 or 11 a.m.
Another local said the most vulnerable are suffering the most. “Children and the elderly are the worst affected. Everyone here fears a repeat of the 2014 floods,” he said.
Locals also accused the authorities of being slow to respond. “Despite repeated requests, no visible preventive measures were taken before the water entered our area,” a group of residents said.
By afternoon, SDRF and police teams arrived with boats, helping people from inundated spots and providing immediate relief. SDRF officials said teams were actively assisting residents. “We have deployed personnel with boats in Rajbagh and nearby areas. Our men are rescuing stranded families and moving them to safety. More reinforcements are on standby,” one official said.
Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department stated they were maintaining a strict vigil at vulnerable embankments. “The situation is being monitored round-the-clock. People should remain cautious and adhere to advisories,” an official said.
