Srinagar, Aug 10 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to introduce a crop insurance scheme specifically tailored for the horticulture sector, a major contributor to the region's economy, to benefit hundreds of farmers. An official from the administration informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the scheme aims to protect farmers from the adverse effects of unpredictable weather and natural disasters, addressing a long-standing demand from stakeholders. The proposed crop insurance scheme is designed to mitigate financial losses faced by farmers due to crop failures caused by natural calamities, pests and diseases. By providing this safety net, the scheme aims to encourage farmers to invest in better farming practices and technologies, ultimately leading to increased productivity and sustainability. Bashir Ahmad Basheer, chairman of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, told KNO that the issue has been raised with concerned authorities multiple times. Recently, the government indicated that it is now giving the green light to this much-needed scheme, which is expected to benefit farmers significantly and should be approved as soon as possible, he said. The official said the government plans to collaborate with insurance companies and financial institutions to implement the scheme effectively. “The insurance will be subsidised, making it affordable for farmers,” he said, adding that awareness campaigns and training sessions will be conducted to educate farmers about the benefits and processes involved in availing crop insurance. A top official in the horticulture department informed KNO that the proposal is in its final stages and is expected to be approved soon. The introduction of the crop insurance scheme is anticipated to boost farmers' confidence, encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices, stabilise farm incomes and reduce dependency on government aid during crises, thereby contributing to the overall economic development of the region—(KNO)
