Gurez, Aug 09 (KNO): The persistent power challenges faced by Gurez, a picturesque valley in North Kashmir's Bandipora district, are on the brink of resolution. Despite the presence of the functional 330-megawatt Kishanganga power project, Gurez has long been without a reliable power connection. However, a ray of hope emerges as power project progresses swiftly in the region, heralding the promise of electricity for Gurez. An official, sharing details with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), divulged significant advancements in the power infrastructure. "The construction of the Control room building at Dawar has been successfully completed, while over 80 percent of the work on the construction of the 33KV outdoor yard at the receiving station in Dawar is also finished," he said. In terms of the critical 33KV line, connecting Bandipora grid to Dawar, the official revealed substantial progress. "Out of the 66-kilometer stretch, 22 kilometers have been fully completed up to Peer Baba, with pole erection reaching completion. Two pivotal 250KVA (33/.433 KV) stations at Tragbal and Peer Baba have been charged and are operational," he added. He also said that the ongoing project also encompasses the construction of a chain link fencing wall, with 40 percent of the work already accomplished. "Also, the development of a 3.15 MVA switching station at DAM TOE is making steady strides in its civil work progress," he added. Another official outlined the future trajectory of the project, stating that once the remaining work of the project valued at 2676.92 lacs, is completed, Gurez will experience continuous electricity supply for the first time. When asked about the anticipated timeline, the official acknowledged the unique challenges posed by the geography. "The valley's road traverses high altitudes, including the formidable Razdan Pass, a 3,556-meter high mountain pass in the Himalayas. Unpredictable and unfavorable weather conditions at these altitudes make it difficult to ascertain a specific deadline at this stage," the official said. Presently, Gurez relies on high-capacity diesel generators stationed in various localities to provide timed and restricted power supply to households at subsidized rates. These generators have been instrumental, the storage, management, and maintenance of fuel during winters remain a persistent issue—(KNO)
