Jammu, Aug 04 (KNO): The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu is set to expand its academic and infrastructure capacity as part of a government-approved plan to increase student intake and research facilities in five newer IITs established after 2014. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Monday, the Ministry of Education, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), confirmed that IIT Jammu is among the five institutions selected for infrastructure development to accommodate an additional 6,500 students collectively. The announcement follows the 2025–26 Union Budget, which included provisions for expansion at IITs located in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Jammu & Kashmir. The expansion plan, approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2025, includes academic blocks, hostel infrastructure, and the creation of a Research Park at IIT Jammu. The total outlay for the five IITs has been set at Rs 11,828.79 crore. The government did not specify the individual share of seats or funds for each IIT. However, the planned development is expected to significantly boost the student intake and research capacity at IIT Jammu over the coming years. In addition to IIT Jammu, the government has also allocated Rs 1,942 crore for the infrastructure expansion of IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna, and IIT Indore through the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA). The Ministry said that IITs play a central role in technical education and research in India, with increasing focus on innovation and global competitiveness—(KNO)
