Srinagar, Mar 27 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh collectively have 2,741 km of National Highways (NHs), with ongoing and upcoming projects aimed at improving road connectivity in the region, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha. As per the government report, J&K has 1,935 km of NHs, while Ladakh has 806 km, contributing to India’s total NH network of 146,204 km. The development and expansion of highways—including their conversion into four-, six-, and eight-lane roads—are being carried out based on traffic density, road conditions, and national infrastructure priorities. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has undertaken 636 NH projects covering 16,422 km across the country, with an estimated cost of ₹6.35 lakh crore. These projects are in various stages of construction, with 8,852 km already completed, and the remaining scheduled for phased completion by FY 2028-29. The expansion of NHs in J&K and Ladakh is crucial for enhancing connectivity, trade, and tourism. The region’s strategic location demands robust road infrastructure, particularly for military mobility, economic activities, and improved accessibility for residents. Given winter closures and challenging terrain, the government has prioritized highway expansion and tunnel construction to ensure year-round connectivity. Projects such as the Zojila Tunnel and the four-laning of key highways are part of efforts to strengthen road links between J&K, Ladakh, and the rest of India—(KNO)
