Kashmir to host first national-level ‘drug-free power lifting championship’ in July | KNO

Srinagar, Apr 12 (KNO): In a first-of-its-kind event in the valley, the Natural Power Lifting Federation, in collaboration with the Global Power lifting Committee, is set to host the Deadlift and Benchpress Powerlifting Championship under the banner of “Jannat-e-Kashmir” from July 21 to 22, 2025, at Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Stadium, Srinagar. As per the details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the championship, organised by the Natural Power lifting Association Jammu and Kashmir, will feature competitions in various categories including teen, junior, senior, master and physically challenged men and women. The event coordinators, addressing a press conference here, said this is a historic moment for Kashmir as for the first time, a national-level drug-free power lifting event is being organised here. They said around 150 to 200 athletes from across India are expected to participate, adding that the championship aims to promote fitness and sports among youth and create awareness against drug abuse. “Our motto is ‘Drug-Free, Champion Strong’. Any participant found using steroids or banned substances will be handed a lifetime ban,” he said. The winners will receive world-class medals, specially made in South Korea, weighing 240 grams and 5 inches in size. “This is not just a competition, it is a platform to show the world that Kashmir is not only beautiful but also capable of hosting national and international sports events,” they said. The entry categories, the organisers, said include teens (13–19 years); juniors (20–23 years); seniors (24–39 years); masters (40+ in different age brackets); physically challenged athletes. The weight classes for both men and women will be followed strictly, and body weight check-ins will be held on July 21 at the venue, they said, adding that the championship will include both single (Rs 2,500) and double events (Rs 4,500). The organisers of the event include Umar, Bhupender Sachdeva, Nasir Ahmad Ganaie and Sanjay Dabholkar. “The last date for fee submission is May 25, 2025, and for registrations and further details, athletes can contact the organizers or visit the venue,” they added—(KNO)
