Srinagar, Jan 30 (KNO): Doctors on Tuesday said that people need to come forward and support and rehabilitate patients suffering from leprosy to fight the disease. With this year's theme "end stigma and embrace dignity", doctors pledged to curb the disease and stigma it carries. Dr Afroza posted in Srinagar told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)that on this day doctors and officers take a pledge to work for ending the stigma related to this disease and will help for the treatment and rehabilitation of such patients. She said that if anyone is being diagnosed of leprosy, the family hesitates due to which the person doesn't get care and treatment required in time. Dr Mohammad Shafi posted in Anantnag told KNO that one of the most effective methods to reduce stigmatization is early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. If left untreated, he said the disease may progress and result in permanent disabilities. “The bacteria are transmitted via droplets from the nose and mouth during close and frequent contact with untreated cases. Leprosy is curable with multi-drug therapy (MDT),” he added. He added that most people who are infected with Mycobacterium leprae do not develop leprosy because their immune system fights off the infection. “The three main symptoms of leprosy include, Skin patches that may be red or have a loss of pigmentation. Skin patches with diminished or absent sensations. Numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, arms and legs,” he added—(KNO)
