Srinagar, Sep 04 (KNO): The Rotary international is conducting a mega surgical project in South Kashmir with 2000 patients registered for the camp.
As per the details available with News Agency Kashmir News Observer, the surgeries will be performed in different government hospitals of South Kashmir and it will continue till September 13.
As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Girish Gune Chairman-Kashmir Mega surgical project said that a Kashmir Mega Surgical Project was held in North Kashmir in four places in Baramulla, Kupwara, Sopore and Ganderbal.
“This Mega Surgical Project was highly successful with the fact that 2500 beneficiaries got operated in nine days. The Government provided all the infrastructure for surgeries including theatres, hospitals etc. Moreover extra paramedical staff, nursing and theatre assistant staff and local medical consultants & Government Doctors were made available to take care of patients pre & post operatively,” he said.
With the help of a team of 42 Rotary Volunteer Surgeons, operations were performed in specialities of Ophthalmology, General & Laparoscopic Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Urology, he said.
“This year, we are conducting a Mega Surgical Project of the Government of Kashmir and Rotary International in South Kashmir from 3rd September to 13th September. The Surgeries will be performed at Government Hospitals in Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian & Kulgam in specialities of Ophthalmology. General & Laparoscopic Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery. ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery and Cancer Surgery. A team of 32 Rotary Volunteer Surgeons with the help of Local Government Doctors, Paramedical Staff will do these surgeries,” he said.
"Almost 2000 patients are registered for this Mega Surgical Camp. We are extremely thankful to the Government of Kashmir for showing this trust in Rotary for this humanitarian service," he added.
Dr. Rajiv Pradhan, Chief Advisor of the club, said that Rotary districts started doing large scale surgery projects in Africa in 1997.
“Initially the team consisted of only orthopedic and ophthalmic surgeons, however over the years, we have started doing all types of surgeries including super specialties like spine, brain, plastic surgeries,” he added.
“These days, the team comprises 20-25 surgeons and 7-8 volunteers. Till today, Rotary districts in India have done 47 mega surgical projects in 18 African countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Madagascar, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi, Cameroon, Gabon etc. The teams have also done projects in Mongolia, Cambodia,” he said.
“Over one lakh free surgeries have been performed in all these projects. The public image of Rotary & India has greatly enhanced in these countries. The projects have established India's credibility as a giving country. The skills, talent and knowledge of Indian doctors have been hailed in all these countries. In India too, similar large-scale projects have been organized in Orissa, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh and in Kashmir. Over 300 surgeons have participated in these projects,” Dr Rajiv said.
He said they have done a similar project in Udhampur and North Kashmir and are ready to serve the people of South Kashmir now—(KNO)
