Srinagar, Mar 27 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday said that several stretches along the banks of the Kishanganga River in Gurez have witnessed soil erosion due to natural factors, including steep slopes, fast-flowing water, and increased discharge during rainfall and snowmelt. Replying to an unstarred question tabled by MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan (Gurez) in the Legislative Assembly, the government, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that erosion has occurred along embankments as rising river discharge often leads to the washing away of sections of riverbanks. It said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) amounting to Rs 9.48 crore has been formulated for the construction of protection works on both sides of the Kishanganga River and its tributaries. The proposed works include crates, spurs, check dams and other allied measures at vulnerable locations. The government further said that the Soil & Water Conservation Wing of the Forest Department has already executed several protection measures along the river over the past four years, including the construction of around 497 cubic metres of DRSM works and installation of approximately 154 crates. The government added that under the CAPEX Budget 2026-27, treatment of the Neru tributary of the Kishan Ganga River has been taken up, with proposed works including 350 cubic metres of DRSM works and 84 crates. However, regarding the timeline for execution of additional embankment works, the government said that further action will be taken once the funding source is finalized—(KNO)
