Jammu, Jan 18 (KNO): As the train is all set to connect Kashmir with Kanyakumari, Northern Railway has decided to invest approximately Rs 450 crore in the modernization and redevelopment of Jammu Tawi Railway Station. According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the ambitious project aims to enhance passenger experience, safety, connectivity, and operational efficiency, bringing the station in line with modern infrastructure standards. An official said that the commissioning of the remodeled Jammu Tawi yard is slated for March 6, 2025. “With yard remodeling nearing completion, the remaining non-interlocking work is also progressing rapidly,” he said, adding, “The yard remodeling is a challenging yet critical component of the station redevelopment. It will pave the way for further infrastructure upgrades.” The official said that the number of platforms will increase from the current three to seven, with the addition of four new platforms equipped with state-of-the-art ballastless track technology. “Enhanced hygiene will be ensured with washable aprons on all platforms, contributing to a cleaner environment,” he said, adding, “The expansion will streamline train operations and provide passengers with a more comfortable experience.” “The expansion plan also includes two new foot overbridges (FOBs), each 12 meters wide, a 72-meter-wide air concourse to connect all seven platforms, allowing seamless passenger movement and improved flow. A new 4,500 sqm second entry building will be developed on the Narwal side to cater to growing passenger needs,” the official said, adding, “The main station building will be upgraded to a 15,600 sqm facility, featuring modern amenities and a contemporary design. The signal control room will be relocated to the new station building. The number of washing pit lines will increase from three to five, allowing the station to handle more trains efficiently.” Another official told KNO that the addition of four stabling lines would enhance the station's capacity to manage train operations and shunting more effectively. “A parcel siding will become functional post-upgradation, boosting freight-handling capabilities,” he said, adding, “ The outdated mechanical interlocking systems will be replaced with advanced electronic interlocking, ensuring greater safety and operational efficiency.” UDHAMPUR-SRINAGAR-BARAMULLA RAILWAY LINK AWAITS INAUGURATION Pertinently, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) earlier this week authorised the opening of the newly constructed 17 km long Katra-Reasi rail track for public carriage of goods and passenger traffic. The entire Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla new broad-gauge rail link project has been completed and its awaiting inauguration. The CRS has cleared the path to run a train between Jammu and Srinagar. Preparations are underway to run Vande Bharat, Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains on the track—(KNO)
